This sycamore tree had a whole colony of snails (Helix aspersa) sheltering (hibernating) in a large crack- very odd!
Other trees had snails in sheltered knots, but this was by far the biggest colony, on the landward (sheltered) side (the sea is a few 100m behind the tree)
Winner of the 'Winter' category of the 'Woodlands though the seasons' 2008 competition run by the Borders Forest Trust
Highly Commended in the 2009 Nature of Britain competition run by the Scottish Seabird Centre.
